The strategic partnership between India and Japan has entered a new and extremely important chapter. The high-level bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takachi in New Delhi have given a new direction to the future global economy and security scenario. In this summit, a comprehensive joint roadmap regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI), defence, energy and economic security has been approved, which will take the relations between the two countries to new heights.
Big investment of 12.5 billion dollars and 120 new agreements
Japan’s unwavering faith in India’s growing economy was clearly visible during this visit. Parallel to the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, Japanese companies are set to announce huge investments worth around $12.5 billion in India. This investment will be made through approximately 120 cooperation agreements in areas such as semiconductors, clean energy, mobility, manufacturing and infrastructure. The move is part of the commitment made in Tokyo last year, under which Japan aims to invest more than $61 billion in India over the next decade.
Defense and Security: ‘2+2’ dialogue will strengthen maritime security
Amidst the changing global equations, India and Japan have decided to deepen defense cooperation. Both countries will review their strategies regarding maritime security. Also, Japan’s acceptance of updated guidelines for defense equipment transfers and the decision to hold the next ‘2+2’ (Foreign and Defense Minister level) talks by the end of this year is a major achievement. Experts believe that this partnership will make India and Japan more self-reliant and secure in the global supply chain in response to China’s non-market policies on rare earth elements and supply chains.
Technology and Innovation: New ecosystem will be created in AI and semiconductor
The most important pillar of this partnership is ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI). The two leaders emphasized that Japan’s advanced manufacturing and engineering capabilities, combined with India’s vast software industry and skilled technical workforce, will create a powerful ecosystem. Under this, projects like collaboration in semiconductor materials plant by Fujifilm, biogas project by Suzuki and joint application development between Indian-Japanese AI startups will bring revolution in the future. Apart from this, the discussion on expansion of Japan’s famous Shinkansen (Bullet Train) technology in India has also gained momentum.
Roadmap to Economic Security
Prime Minister Sanae Takachi made it clear that India and Japan are on the path to becoming stronger and prosperous by leveraging each other’s strengths amid a turbulent global scenario. Both countries have placed economic security at the center of their policy to address supply chain vulnerabilities in strategic sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals. The participation of more than 150 Japanese companies and the activation of the India-Japan Economic Forum show that this is not just a diplomatic agreement, but a solid business partnership that will create huge opportunities for ordinary citizens as well.
