Indian Meteorological Department chief Mrityunjay Mohapatra has said that India is helping its five neighboring countries in developing weather-related early warning systems. The five neighboring countries that India is helping are Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Mauritius. The head of the Indian Meteorological Department said that work on this project is going on to prevent loss of life and property in case of natural disasters. He said that India will play the role of elder brother and help neighboring countries in rescue during natural disasters.
It is noteworthy that the United Nations has started a campaign named Early Warning System. This campaign was started in the year 2022. Under this campaign, emphasis has been laid on the system to protect the people of all the countries of the world from natural disasters by the year 2027. 30 countries have been selected in the first phase of the campaign run by the United Nations. India is helping five out of those 30 countries. 50 percent of the countries in the world still do not have any warning system to prevent natural disasters. This includes small, poor and island countries.
India is providing technical assistance
Financial assistance will be provided on public-private partnership basis to develop early warning systems in these countries. India is providing technical assistance. According to the report of the World Meteorological Organization, 101 countries of the world still do not have a weather-related early warning system. In contrast, water-related natural disasters have increased fivefold from 1970 to 2019.
