India-China Border Talks: NSA Ajit Doval reaching Beijing, high-level discussion will be held on resolving LAC border dispute

A major step is being taken at the diplomatic and strategic level to resolve the long-running standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is visiting Beijing for high-level talks with his Chinese counterpart under the Special Representative mechanism on the border issue. This dialogue is being considered very decisive in bringing the relations between the two countries back on track and restoring permanent peace in the border areas.

New round of talks under the Special Representative Mechanism

The Special Representative (SR) dialogue mechanism established to resolve the India-China border dispute is the most effective forum between the two countries. Ajit Doval is leading the mechanism from the Indian side, where he will hold detailed discussions with the Chinese Foreign Minister and top diplomats on technical and strategic issues related to demarcation, patrolling rights and buffer zones. The main objective of this meeting is to speed up the process of complete disengagement and de-escalation of troops on the LAC, so that the risk of any kind of confrontation on the forward fronts can be eliminated.

Eastern Ladakh standoff and impact on bilateral relations

In the year 2020, there was a deep strain in the relations between the two Asian powers after the military tension that arose in the Galwan Valley and surrounding areas of eastern Ladakh. Although after several rounds of meetings at the military and diplomatic level, there has been some consensus on strategic points like Pangong Tso, Gogra-Hot Springs and Depsang-Demchok, there remains a need for concrete decisions at the political and top strategic level for overall border management and confidence building. Doval’s visit will focus on bridging strategic distrust and streamlining the pre-April 2020 status quo and patrolling protocols on the Line of Actual Control.

Regional security and geopolitical implications

Amidst the rapid changes in the global geopolitical landscape, stability between India and China is considered important for the entire Asia-Pacific and global economy. New Delhi’s stance has always been clear that unless there is peace and stability on the border, overall bilateral relations cannot be normal. Apart from border security, views will also be shared in this meeting on new confidence building measures, modernization of hotline communication between the two armies and issues related to management of border infrastructure. This diplomatic initiative can prove to be a milestone in the future in reducing tension in the border areas.
