India beats China in terms of exports, earns $3.53 billion by selling smartphones to America

Smartphone Export: India's smartphone exports to the US increased to $3.53 billion during April-December in the current financial year, from $998 million in FY 2022-23. According to Commerce Ministry data, India's share in smartphone exports increased to 7.76 percent during the April-December period of the current financial year from two percent earlier. According to the information, exports have increased due to increase in smartphone manufacturing.

India becomes the third largest exporter

With this, India has become the third largest smartphone exporter in America. In this list, China is at first place and Vietnam is at second place. In the first nine months of the current fiscal year, the share of China and Vietnam in smartphone exports to the US has declined. Smartphone exports to the US from the top five suppliers declined to $45.1 billion in April-December 2023 from $49.1 billion in April-December 2022. During the period under review, China exported smartphones worth $35.1 billion to the US, compared to $38.26 billion last year. Similarly, Vietnam's exports to the US fell to $5.47 billion.

Big jump in mobile phone production

Mobile phone production in India has increased rapidly in the last decade. In 2014, 78 percent of mobile phones sold in the country were imported, whereas now about 97 percent of mobile phones are made in India. According to India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), mobile phone production in 2014-15 was Rs. 18,900 crore to an estimated Rs. 4.10 lakh crores i.e. more than 20 times. Overall, more than 245 crore mobile phone sets have been manufactured in India in the last 10 years.
