Paris, August 2 (HS). The Indian men's hockey team defeated Australia 3-2 in a Pool B match at the ongoing Paris Olympics at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on Friday.

This is their first win against Australia since the 1972 Olympics in Munich. India bounced back after losing 1-2 to defending champions Belgium in their previous game.

India started the match brightly and Abhishek (12′) and skipper Harmanpreet Singh (13′) scored within two minutes of the first quarter to give India a 2-0 lead. However, Thomas Craig (25′) converted a penalty corner to bring the Aussies back in the contest.

In the 32nd minute of the match, Harmanpreet scored her second goal and gave India a 3-1 lead. In the 55th minute of the match, Blake Govers scored for Australia to make the score 3-2 and in the end this score proved to be decisive.

With this win, India have moved to second place in Pool B, replacing Australia with three wins, two draws and one loss. Australia are third with three wins and two losses.
