Amidst the preparations for the national festival of Independence Day in the country’s capital New Delhi, there was a sudden panic regarding security arrangements. Just before the historic celebrations of 15th August, emails threatening to bomb several ultra-sensitive and VVIP locations in Delhi have been received. Major locations threatened to be targeted include Delhi High Court, Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) Terminal 3, Red Fort area and various government administrative offices. As soon as these threatening messages came to light, teams of Delhi Police, Central Intelligence Agencies, Bomb Disposal Squad (BDDS), Dog Squad and Delhi Fire Service immediately came on high alert mode.
What was contained in the threatening email and which targets were targeted?
According to official information received, emails were sent to the government machinery and court offices from unknown sources on Friday morning. Registrar General office of Delhi High Court, Terminal 3 of IGI Airport, Jamnagar House, Jhandewalan office, Saket SDM office and Delhi Cantt SDM office were directly targeted in these threats. The email warned of a series of blasts at the court complex and other public places, specifying a specific time. Additionally, the message claimed to disrupt Independence Day events by mentioning separatist ideology and controversial references.
Quick action and search operation by security agencies
As soon as information about threatening messages was received, an intensive search operation was started in every nook and corner of the capital. Special squads of Delhi Police, with the help of dog squads and modern metal detectors, conducted a thorough search of the entire premises of Delhi High Court, court rooms, parking areas and administrative buildings. Similarly, at Indira Gandhi International Airport, security agencies and CISF ensured multi-layered checking of passengers’ luggage, cargo terminal and public areas, enhancing the level of security manifold. After hours of intensive search operation, officials clarified that no suspicious or explosive material has been recovered from any location and initially it appears to be a well-planned ‘hoax’.
Impenetrable security circle at Red Fort and tight security in Delhi
The Red Fort, the main venue of Independence Day celebrations, and the entire area around it have already been transformed into a strong security fort. In view of the Prime Minister’s address to the nation and the presence of thousands of dignitaries, multi-layered security arrangements have been implemented in the National Capital Region. Anti-Drone Systems, snipers and high-definition CCTV cameras equipped with facial recognition technology have been activated around the Red Fort, Rajghat, India Gate, Parliament House and the Central Secretariat. Strict checking of every vehicle is being done at all the interstate borders, toll plazas and check posts of Delhi so that any unwanted activity can be thwarted in time.
Cyber cell investigation and IP address tracking
Special Cell and Cyber Crime Unit of Delhi Police have started technical investigation to trace the sender of the email. In the preliminary investigation, it is suspected that proxy servers and VPN networks may have been used to send the emails. Security agencies are thoroughly investigating foreign domains and suspicious IP addresses. Delhi Police has appealed to all the citizens and travelers of the capital to ignore any kind of rumors, maintain patience and immediately report any unclaimed item or suspicious activity to the nearest police control room.
