Independence Day 2024: The country is celebrating its 78th Independence Day on 15 August. Then there is an atmosphere of enthusiasm and patriotism across the country on India's Independence Day. On this day people celebrate independence and pay tribute to freedom fighters. But the question in your mind is why the date of 15 August was chosen for independence? Let's know about it-
Why is Independence Day celebrated only on 15 August?
According to the plan of the British rule, India was to get independence on 30 June 1948. However, due to tensions between Nehru and Mohammad Ali Jinnah over the partition of Pakistan and the rise of communal riots, it was decided to grant independence to India on 15 August 1947.
Lord Mountbatten introduced the Indian Independence Bill in the British House of Commons on 4 July 1947, which was approved by the British Parliament and later declared 15 August as Independence Day.
Why choose 15 August?
15th August was a very special day for Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India. The Second World War ended on 15th August 1945 and the Japanese army surrendered to the British Army. Lord Mountbatten was the commander of the Allied forces in the British Army at that time and the entire credit for the surrender of the Japanese army was given to Mountbatten. Therefore, this day was special for him. Therefore, Mountbatten considered 15th August as the best day of his life and hence he chose 15th August as the Independence Day of India.
Mahatma Gandhi was not included
Mahatma Gandhi did not participate in the Independence Day celebrations because the partition of India and Pakistan had caused a lot of communal violence in the country. Therefore, Gandhi believed that it was necessary to establish peace in the country before celebrating independence. Apart from this, Gandhi was strongly opposed to the partition of India. He wanted Hindus and Muslims to live together. He was very sad about the partition and therefore did not participate in the Independence Day celebrations.
