Income Tax Notice: Many times people get some fake documents made to get income tax refund. These include fake house rent, fake donations or falsely inflating some expenses. However, now there is no mercy for those who commit such frauds. The Income Tax Department is preparing to investigate any suspicious case and strict action can be taken if such fraud is found.

The Income Tax Department plans to verify such high-risk refund claims during FY 2023-24 or Assessment Year 2024-25. The purpose of this verification is to find out whether tax refunds are being taken by any individual or by giving false information in an organized manner.

Common phone-emails are being investigated

The Income Tax Department is trying to find out whether fake house rent allowance has been taken from the same email ID or mobile number. It will also be investigated whether deduction under 80G has been claimed through fake donations. Or someone has wrongly saved income tax by exaggerating his expenses.

SOP instructions issued

The Directorate of Income Tax System has issued SOP instructions for such high-risk income tax refund cases. This SOP has also been sent to all assessing officers, TDS charge officers and investigation wing officers. Let us tell you that the Directorate of Income Tax System comes under the Ministry of Finance.

Common pattern of email-mobile number observed

According to media reports, the SOP states that many refund claims have been made by wrongly claiming TDS credit, under-reporting income, inflating deductions and showing fake expenses. The issue came to light when it was observed that multiple returns were filed from the same email ID or mobile number. Now there is also talk of sending this matter to the nodal officers of the Central Registry Units.

Fraudsters are being identified

Tax officials have been asked to trace those who have used the common email ID or mobile number through the Insight portal and e-filing portal. Such people may be asked to confirm the matter by sending a notice from the Income Tax Department. Strict action can be taken against fraudsters.
