When India became independent on 15 August 1947 after nearly 200 years of slavery, there was an atmosphere of celebration in the whole country. People were celebrating everywhere. However, there was a part of the country where the joy of independence came after a whole day. That is, in this part of the country, not 15 August but 16 August is celebrated as Independence Day. Let us know why even today people here celebrate Independence Day on 16 August. Along with this, we will also know where this place is in India.
This special place is in Himachal Pradesh. Theog is a city about 30 km away from Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla. The local people here celebrate Independence Day on 16 August, apart from this people also celebrate this day in the form of Rahli and Jalsa. On this day people wear new clothes, hug each other and distribute sweets among themselves.
It is said that even though the country got independence from British slavery on 15 August 1947, the first popularly elected government in the country was formed in Shimla city. Actually, before 16 August 1947, Theog was ruled by kings but one evening the public stood in front of the palace to revolt against the kings of Theog state. After this, King Risait of Theog abdicated the throne and on 16 August 1947, the first government was formed in Theog under the leadership of Surat Ram Prakash of Prajamandal. This is the reason why people here celebrate Independence Day on 16 August. Local people also call it Theog Utsav.
When Raja Karamchand had to abdicate the throne after the public's revolt, Surat Ram Prakash of Praja Mandal was sworn in as the Prime Minister. Apart from this, Home Minister Buddhiram Verma, Education Minister Sitaram Verma and eight others took oath as ministers.
