Mumbai: Many people opt for suicide due to many reasons like family disputes, work load, financial constraints, illness, despair, failure in love etc. Many people commit suicide by jumping in front of local or express trains running on Central or Western Railway. In the last six months, 51 people committed suicide on Central and Western Railway. This includes 47 men and 4 women.

Between 1 January and 31 June 2024, 34 people committed suicide in Central Railway. This includes 31 men and 3 women. So in the same period, 17 people committed suicide in Western Railway. This includes 16 men and one woman. In Central Railway, the highest number of suicides have happened in Kalyan Railway Police Station where 20 people have committed suicide. On the other hand, in Western Railway, the highest number of 12 people have committed suicide in Palghar Railway Police Station.

It is clear that the number of suicides is higher among men than women. However, the railway timetable is often disrupted due to these suicides. Because after jumping in front of the railway or committing suicide in any way, it often takes a lot of time for the concerned department of the railway to get that information and for the staff to reach and pick up the body. Therefore, due to a suicide incident, all the local trains running in that direction run late and the entire timetable of the railway gets disrupted due to the delay in reaching the destination and returning to the scheduled station.
