The government has allotted a new number series for promotional calls and other service calls. The number series for promotional calls starts from 140 and the number series for other services starts from 160. Before this, promotional calls keep coming from numbers of other services and consumers are forced to listen to these calls. According to SP Kochhar, Director General, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), all telephone companies are finalizing its implementation with technology partners.
He said that telecom companies are also working in this direction so that commercial or business messages or calls are not sent without the approval of the users. Therefore, work is being done in collaboration with banks, financial institutions, real estate agencies. Recently, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs has constituted a committee to curb nuisance calls from unregistered telemarketers. COAI and its members are also associated with this committee. The committee will prepare guidelines to curb unwanted commercial calls under the Consumer Protection Act.
