Hamirpur, 22 July (HS). The first Monday of the month of Sawan is being celebrated with fervour in the centuries old Shiv temple in Hamirpur district. The Shivling of Shalleshwar Mahadev is installed in this temple, in whose womb the history of about eight hundred and seventy years is hidden. Every year the Shivling is growing continuously like rice. Today, Kanwariyas performed Jalabhishek of the Shivling of Bhagwan Bholenath, while there is a long queue of devotees in the temple.

The celebration of Sawan month has started from today in Shalleshwar temple in Sarila town, about 85 km from Hamirpur district headquarters of Bundelkhand. Sarila town was a princely state before independence. Social worker Mahendra Singh Rajput here told that Sarila area existed even during the Mahabharata period. This area has been considered the most backward in Bundelkhand. In the past of ancient temples, a huge Shivalinga is present in Shalleshwar temple here. It is still compared to many Shiva temples including Koteshwar and Lodheshwar. There is an inscription in Devnagari language of Samvat 1202 on the walls of the Shiva temple here. No one has been able to understand this language. There is also an inscription written Shillsen, Pravardhna in the temple itself. Its meaning is also beyond understanding. This temple has been decorated a lot for the month of Sawan. The temple and the entire complex have been decorated with colorful lights and twinkling lights. On the first Monday of Sawan month, a large number of people performed Jalabhishek and Puja since morning. Many Kanwadis also performed Jalabhishek of Mahadev's Shivalinga.

This Shiva temple was built between the Gupta period and the Chandela period

Hamirpur's litterateur and author of many books, Dr. Bhavanidin Prajapati told that the Shalleshwar Shivalaya in Sarila is very huge and amazing. Looking at the monastery of the temple here, it seems that it must have been built between the Gupta period and the Chandela period. But looking at the Shivalinga, it is clear that this temple was built before the reign of the Chandelas. The temple looks very beautiful due to the dome and wall in the monastery. He told that the lineage of Sarila State started from Maharaj Chhatrasal.

Shalleshwar temple was expanded eight hundred years ago

Social worker Mahendra Singh Rajput told that the expansion of this temple was done by the king Shillsen. This Shivalaya made of only lime and concrete is still unmatched in strength. The temple has also been built with oily stones of Chandel period. He told that there is a pond near the temple, on the banks of which there is Shalhau Kuanbana. The pond and the well are connected to the temple through an underground tunnel. It is believed that drinking a little water from the well cures skin diseases.
