In Pakistan, the man who described his wife as characterless was sentenced to 80 lashes

Karachi, 9 April (HIST). In Pakistan's Sindh province, a man who falsely accused his ex-wife of being of bad character and denied being the father of the daughter born to her, has been sentenced to 80 lashes by the Karachi Sessions Court. The woman's lawyer Saira Banu said that such a punishment has been given for the first time after many decades.

Such punishment was not given in Pakistan after the reign of Ziaul Haq. Additional District and Sessions Judge Malir Shahnaz Bohoyo sentenced the accused Farid Qadir. The decision was given under Section 7 (1) of the Qazaf Offenses (Enforcement of Limits) Ordinance 1979. This section states 'Whoever is liable to Qazaf shall be punished with 80 lashes.'

After confirmation of the conviction and sentence by the Court of Appeal, the Court of Session will fix the time and place for flogging. Farid can remain on bail after giving consent to appear at the appointed time and place to face punishment. He has been asked to submit a Pakistani surety bond of Rs 1 lakh.
