Mumbai – Some time ago, when the price of tomato in Mumbai had crossed a century, the faces of common people turned red after hearing the price. In the last few days, due to huge revenue in Mumbai, tomato prices have started falling. At present good quality tomatoes are being sold at Rs 15 to 20 per kg.

According to sources at APMC’s Bhajipala market in Navi Mumbai, there has been a bumper crop of tomatoes in the tomato growing areas of Maharashtra, hence the trucks are loaded with tomatoes. Due to this the prices have started decreasing. The wholesale price of tomato was around Rs 1200 per quintal (100 kg). So it is said to be Rs 12 per kg. Whereas the price of tomato in the retail market is around Rs 15 to 20 per kg. Now tomato sellers have started coming to other areas from Pune. Apart from this, in areas like Dadar, Lower Parel, Matunga etc., many fairies go out on foot and carry lorries to sell tomatoes like ‘Lo Sasta Tameta’.

A trader in Bhajipala market said that tomatoes have to be sold as soon as possible because they spoil quickly. Otherwise, when tomatoes get spoiled and rot, they have to be thrown away. Therefore, instead of throwing it away, farmers prefer to sell it at whatever price they get. On the other hand, onion prices made people cry for months. Now as the income has started increasing in full swing, the prices of new onions have also started decreasing. A few days ago, onion was being sold at Rs 80 to 100 per kg, but now it is being sold at the retail price of Rs 40 to 50 per kg. Thus, common people have felt a lot of relief as the price of onion has been halved.

A trader at the onion-potato market of Navi Mumbai APMC said that the price of normal quality onion in bulk is Rs 25 to 30 per kg and the price of very good quality onion is Rs 30 to 35 per kg. The price will still be low. Whereas in retail onion is sold for Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg.

According to the trader, more than 100 trucks have started arriving from Nashik district, which is the largest onion producing center in the country. That’s why piles of onions have started appearing in the market. Since export duty on onion has not been completely abolished, exports have reduced. Therefore, the prices have started decreasing as the goods reach home. Onion prices are likely to fall further.
