The state government has given a big infrastructure gift to lakhs of daily commuters and local residents who have been struggling with traffic jams, narrow roads and heavy vehicles for years in the industrial city of Kanpur. The Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) and the government have given financial and administrative approval to a huge budget of ₹ 81.51 crore for converting the entire route from number nine crossing (Sharda Nagar/Kakadev Belt) to Bhaunti Bypass on the National Highway, the main western link road of Kanpur city, into four lane and widening the link roads connected to it. To get rid of the daily heavy traffic jams, movement of trucks and narrow turns on this busy route, the government has started the process of releasing the first installment of the budget. With this corridor becoming four lane, half an hour of time will be saved for the passengers traveling between South Kanpur, Kakadev, Kalyanpur and Bhaunti Industrial Area.
According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Public Works Department, this entire section of Bhaunti Bypass from crossing number nine is currently two-lane, with the width limited to just 7 to 10 meters at many places. The following major development works will be carried out from the approved budget of ₹81.51 crore:
-
Conversion to four lanes: The entire main road from crossing number nine to Bhaunti Bypass will be made 4-lane (about 14 to 16 meters wide) with paved shoulders. Strong concrete divider, central verge and street lights will be installed on both sides.
-
Strong asphalting and RCC construction: In view of the frequent movement of heavy trucks, trailers and goods vehicles, the lower part of the road will be redesigned as per heavy load bearing capacity, so that the problem of road subsidence or potholes during rainy days can be permanently eliminated.
-
RCC Underground Drainage Network: Concrete covered drains will be built on both sides of the road, which will ensure proper drainage of dirty water from nearby colonies and prolong the life of the road.
-
Utility Duct and Pole Shifting: Underground utility duct will be laid to accommodate hanging electrical wires, transformers and poles so that there is no obstruction in the width of the road.
In this area of Kanpur, the famous coaching hub of Kakadev, the dense residential population of Sharda Nagar and the business hub of Rawatpur are located in and around crossing number nine. Due to this, two-wheelers, e-rickshaws, city buses and private vehicles are seen crawling here for hours during morning and evening peak hours. When heavy commercial vehicles enter the city from Bhaunti or Jhansi-Delhi Highway, the entire route becomes choked. After this route becomes four lane, the vehicles going towards the highway will not have to get stuck in the narrow internal roads of the city. They will be able to proceed at uninterrupted speed directly on GT Road, Delhi-Kolkata National Highway (NH-19) and Kanpur-Jhansi route by bypassing Bhaunti.
Bhaunti Bypass is one of the fastest growing logistics, warehousing and small scale industry hubs of Kanpur. Every day, hundreds of cargo trucks bring raw materials and leave for the markets of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Madhya Pradesh with finished products. With the creation of four-lane connectivity, there will be a major reduction in the cost of movement of transporters and fuel will be saved. Apart from this, this alternative bypass will also prove to be a lifeline for the industries located in Panki Industrial Area and Dada Nagar. Local traders and industry organizations have welcomed this step of the government and said that it will give a new edge to the economic pace of Kanpur.
After the budget of ₹ 81.51 crore was approved by the government, PWD Construction Division has accelerated the e-tendering process. According to officials, the finalization of technical and financial bids will be completed around Diwali, after which the work order will be issued to the selected construction agency. The entire project is targeted to be completed within a time frame of 12 to 14 months i.e. by the second half of 2027. To keep the traffic flowing during the construction, a phased diversion plan is also being prepared in collaboration with the traffic police, so that the general public does not have to face any major problems in their daily commute at the time of widening.
