education
Around 25 lakh students of Bihar, who are studying in classes 5 and 8, will now appear for the annual examinations on the board pattern. After the abolition of the no detention policy (promotion to the next class without failure), students can now be detained in the same class in case of poor performance. The Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education has recently issued a notification in this regard.
New Exam Pattern and Rules
- Students will have to appear in the annual examination.
- If they fail, they will have to retake the exam within two months of the declaration of the result.
- If they also fail in re-examination, they will be stopped in the same class.
- Earlier, state governments used to decide whether children should pass or fail. Now this process will be centralized.
No Detention Policy: What was it and what has changed now?
No Detention Policy:
- Under this, no student was failed till class 8.
- According to this policy, it was mandatory to promote children to the next class until the completion of elementary education.
Now changes:
- Students of classes 5 and 8 will be required to pass the annual examination.
- If they fail, they will get a chance to re-examine within two months.
- Students who fail in re-examination will be retained in the same class.
Special arrangements for failed students
- Re-examination opportunity:
- If students fail in the annual examination, they will have to re-examination within two months.
- There will be competency based assessment in this examination.
- Monitoring of failed students:
- The school will prepare the list of failed students.
- The school will monitor their progress and will not expel them from the school until they complete their education.
The role of parents and teachers increased
Arun Kumar, a teacher at KV Kankarbagh, says that after the new policy:
- Students will have to be serious about studies.
- Schools will personally monitor weaker students.
- Parents will also have to pay attention to their children’s education.
- Teachers will maintain regular contact with parents and teach them how to make their children study in a better way.
Pressure on quality of teaching:
- In case of repeated failure of students, questions may be raised on the teaching skills of teachers.
- So teachers will already pay attention to students and guide them to improve their studies.
