Bollywood actor Imran Khan is in the headlines these days due to a big legal dispute related to his personal life and foreign citizenship. After participating in a political demonstration in Mumbai, he has been directed by the authorities to leave India by October 28 (Leave India Notice). Amidst this unexpected and stressful situation, the actor’s partner and actress Lekha Washington has openly come out in his support. On social media, Lekha has expressed her unwavering love and support towards Imran and encouraged him. From Bandra in Mumbai to the political and Bollywood corridors of Delhi, this entire incident has gained momentum, where on one hand there is a debate about the rights of foreign citizens, while on the other hand fans and close people are seen standing with the actor in this difficult time.
This whole controversy started when actor Imran Khan was present during a protest organized near August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. During this demonstration organized against the Chief Election Commissioner, the police had detained many people including Imran Khan, his partner Lekha Washington and cousin Zain Mary Khan. After this, the matter reached the level of the BJP leader’s complaint and the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Actually, Imran Khan was born in Wisconsin, USA and he is an American citizen by birth and an American passport holder. They live in India through Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card. As per the rules of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, foreign nationals or OCI cardholders resident in India are prohibited from participating in political activities or demonstrations without permission. Citing the alleged violation of this rule, Mumbai Police and related agencies served him a notice to leave the country by October 28.
Amidst this strict notice and legal difficulties given to Imran Khan, his girlfriend Lekha Washington has supported him like a strong pillar. Lekha expressed her support for Imran by sharing many emotional and heart-touching pictures and posts on Instagram. She made it clear that she stands with Imran in every situation. Earlier, while sharing the entire incident that happened on the day of the protest, Lekha had also written a long note, in which she had told that she was not a part of any political organization and had gone there only to inquire about the well-being of her friends. Despite being detained during that time, Lekha maintained her composure and now when pressure is being put on Imran to leave the country, Lekha’s open support is being greatly appreciated among the fans. Both have been dating each other for a long time and live together in Mumbai.
Imran Khan is preparing to adopt legal route against the ultimatum given by the authorities. According to legal experts, the actor can approach the Bombay High Court to challenge this notice. His legal team argues that his entire family, career and life have been established in India for decades and his mere presence in a peaceful place cannot be considered a political movement or a serious violation of visa rules. Imran has a deep connection with India as he belongs to the family of his mother Nuzhat Khan and actor Aamir Khan. As a legal relief, they can demand from the court to impose an interim stay on this order of October 28, so that the case can be heard impartially.
Imran Khan started his career with a bang in the year 2008 with the film ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na’ and made a special place in the hearts of the youth with films like ‘Daily Belly’, ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’. He was completely away from the big screen for the last few years, but recently he was busy preparing for his much-awaited Bollywood comeback. His fans were waiting for his new projects for a long time. In such a situation, this sudden notice of leaving the country has created a big cloud of uncertainty over his career and upcoming projects. If they do not get immediate relief from the court, they may have to leave India within the stipulated time limit. At present, all eyes are on the possible stand of the Bombay High Court and the next step of the Central Government in this matter.
