Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan filed a petition in the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) after not being allowed to talk to his sons over the telephone from Adiala Jail. The petition argued that he has been denied meeting his sons despite being allowed by law. According to the report, the ATC headed by Justice Malik Ijaz Asif has sought a response from the jail administration in this matter. Meanwhile, a day earlier, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) reserved its decision on two other cases including Imran Khan's interim bail plea at Jinnah House and the May 9 events in 2023. During the hearing on Saturday, Imran's lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar argued that the PTI founder was being targeted for political reasons.
Lawyer raised questions on Imran's arrest
Salman Safdar says that he has not seen so many cases against a single person in his entire career. Safdar alleged that the police did not arrest those who were actually inciting against the institutions at the scene. Imran's lawyer questioned how a case could be registered against him when he was in custody at the time of the crime.
Imran accused of inciting supporters
In response, the government lawyer argued that Imran Khan had asked his supporters to target civilians and military installations if he was arrested. The lawyer said that such incidents took place as a result of giving instructions to attack military installations in Pakistan. After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the court reserved its decision on the interim bail plea of the PTI founder.
There was an uproar after Imran's arrest
Violent clashes broke out across Pakistan after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9 last year. Imran Khan's arrest led to massive protests in several major cities and remote areas of the country, leaving party workers enraged and angry. Armed forces were called in from Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad to ensure law and order in the wake of the protests. Military installations, including the house of the Corps Commander in Lahore, were attacked during the workers' protest. After this, Imran Khan was made the main accused in all the cases of May 9 riots.
