New Delhi: Control on import of unregistered information technology (IT) and electronics products will continue, according to a government notification.
Local traders say this means imports of new or second-hand electronic products will continue to be controlled unless they are registered with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and meet labeling requirements .
An import policy has been announced under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Compulsory Registration Order Requirement) 2021.
No changes have been made in the matter of imports. The notification issued by the government on Tuesday indicates that the government's policy is continuing. Because these items are already in the banned category. As per the provisions of the notification, if any goods are imported without the condition of mandatory registration, it will have to be re-exported from the port itself. Otherwise customs officials may discard unused goods and dispose of them as scrap. The importer will have to bear this expense.
Thus, BIS certification is voluntary but the government may make it mandatory in some cases to protect human safety and business interests.
In August 2023, the government banned certain IT hardware items, the ban came based on complaints from domestic and foreign companies, but in October, the government relaxed restrictions on laptop and computer imports.
