Geneva: A United Nations (UN) report has come out regarding the most disaster affected areas. Accordingly, in 2023, Asia was one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world due to weather, climate and water-related threats.
Many countries of Asia including India are also in the grip of heat. According to the report released on Tuesday by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a United Nations agency in Bangkok, floods and storms have caused the highest number of deaths and economic losses in Asia. The effect of heat wave was more visible here.
110 deaths due to extreme heat in April and June
More than 80 percent of flood and storm events in 2023 occurred in Asia. According to the report titled The State of the Climate in Asia 2023, a prolonged heat wave affected South and Southeast Asia. In India, about 110 people died due to extreme heat in April and June.
Last year there was severe heat in most parts of Asia. While in 2023, many areas of Asia experienced deficient rainfall, including the Turan lowland (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan), the Hindu Kush (Afghanistan, Pakistan), the lower reaches of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers (India and Bangladesh). Whereas in July and August last year, landslides occurred in India due to heavy monsoon rains.
