Monsoon rains are becoming a disaster in many states across the country. The most worrying and frightening situation is being seen in Assam, where due to continuous torrential rains and swollen rivers, the death toll due to floods has increased to 68. At present more than 5.24 lakh people of the state are surrounded by flood waters. The most serious situation is in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Nazira areas. Thousands of houses have been destroyed here and in many villages, people’s houses have been filled with 5-5 feet of mud, making it difficult for them to live in their own homes.
Although the water level is gradually falling in some areas, the problems have not reduced. Farms, roads and bridges have been completely damaged. People’s household items, clothes and food ration have been washed away in water and ruined. There are many villages which have been completely cut off from main roads and boats are the only means of transportation left there. Thousands of people made homeless are forced to live in relief camps, where local administration and voluntary organizations are trying to provide food, clean water and essential supplies.
Orange alert in 9 districts of Uttarakhand: Rivers in spate in Tehri, schools closed
In the hilly state of Uttarakhand, the situation has started worsening due to continuous torrential rains. The Meteorological Center has issued an orange alert of heavy rain, thunder and heavy showers for Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh and Nainital districts. Yellow alert continues in the remaining districts of the state. In view of the worsening situation, the state administration has instructed all the District Magistrates to remain on alert mode and keep the disaster management system alert.
Due to rain in Tehri district of Uttarakhand, Bhilangana, Balganga, Nailchami and Bhagirathi rivers are in spate, causing an atmosphere of fear in the coastal areas. Due to severe disruption of normal life, Ghansali Sub-Collector has declared a one-day holiday in all government and non-government schools and Anganwadi centers from classes 1 to 12 as a safety precaution. The district administration is monitoring the situation moment by moment.
108 roads blocked in Himachal, big danger of flash flood till 31st July
A terrible form of monsoon is being seen in Himachal Pradesh also. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert of heavy to very heavy rain in many districts from July 28 to 31. A strict warning has been given about flash floods especially in Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur and Solan districts. Due to continuous rains and landslides at many places, 108 roads in the state have been closed for traffic. Apart from this, 38 drinking water projects and 9 power transformers have come to a standstill. Mandi and Kullu districts have been most affected by the closure of roads.
According to meteorologists, monsoon will remain active in Himachal Pradesh till August 1. During this period, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain in most areas and extremely heavy rain in some areas. The administration has instructed local people and tourists to stay away from swollen rivers and streams and areas prone to landslides. In view of the harsh weather conditions in the three states of Assam, Uttarakhand and Himachal, people have been appealed not to travel unnecessarily and rely only on official warnings.
