‘Illegal occupation of Waqf on 994 properties in the country…’, Central Government gave information to the Parliament about total 872352 properties.

The central government said in Parliament on Monday that a total of 994 properties across the country have been informed about illegal occupation by Waqf. In which Tamil Nadu alone has the maximum number of 734 such properties. In a written reply to questions from Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader John Brittas, the Minority Affairs Ministry, citing available information on Waqf, said that there are 872,352 and 16,713 convertible Waqf properties registered under the Waqf Act in the country.

Minister Kiren Rijiju, in a reply, said that as per the available information, 994 properties have been illegally encroached upon. The ministry further said that out of a total of 994 such properties across the country, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of 734 properties, followed by 152 in Andhra Pradesh, 63 in Punjab, 11 in Uttarakhand and 10 in Jammu and Kashmir.

Waqf has not received land since 2019
On the other hand, the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry told the Rajya Sabha on Monday that no land has been provided to the Waqf Board by the Central Government since 2019. In response to a question regarding information about land given to the Waqf Board by the Central and State Governments since 2019, the Ministry said that there is no data of land given by the State Governments.

However, he said that as far as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is concerned, no land has been provided to the Waqf Board by the Government of India since 2019. Last week, JPC chairperson Jagdambika Pal said the panel had written to state governments seeking details of disputed waqf properties under their jurisdiction.
