Iljarat Godda prisoner dies after falling into ward toilet

Dumka, 21 November (HS). Godda prisoner Nimay Chandra Mahato died after falling into the toilet on Thursday morning. The incident took place in the prisoner ward of the Medical College Hospital.

According to the information, Nimay Chandra was undergoing treatment in the prisoner ward since October 7. Due to facial injuries, the family refused post-mortem, accusing the jail administration of murder. After knowing the truth, the family members got ready for post-mortem.

Nimay Chandra Mahato (53), resident of Shampur, Godda, was serving life imprisonment on murder charges since 2008. In the year 2022, he was shifted to the Central Jail. For the past two months, he was suffering from many other diseases including blood pressure. As the condition of the jail worsened, he was admitted to the prisoner ward of the hospital on October 7.

He fell inside while going to the toilet on Thursday morning and died due to facial injuries. The jail administration informed this to the family and the Deputy Commissioner. On the orders of the Deputy Commissioner, the post-mortem of the body was conducted under the supervision of Executive Magistrate Gautam Modi.

Anil Mahato and nephew Ashutosh Mahato of the deceased prisoner told that on October 7, he called from the jail and informed that Nimai was unwell. Five days ago the prisoner called and said that he had dengue. Bring a blanket. Talked after giving the blanket. There was no injury on the face at that time. When the body was found after death, there was a wound on the face. He has definitely been assaulted. When the nephew talked to the security personnel of the ward, it came to light that he had fallen while going to the toilet in the morning. He was already ill, so he died after getting injured. After this, the anger of the family members calmed down and after conducting the post-mortem, they took the body for cremation.

Dumka Superintendent Central Jail Kumar Chandrashekhar said that the prisoner was undergoing treatment in the ward. The responsibility of security of the ward is on the District Force personnel. Jail has no role in this. Several letters were sent to the family members asking them to take care, but no one came.
