IIT Madras again postpones GATE 2027 registration, new update of ‘Start Soon’ comes on the portal; Know when the applications will start now and what are the new rules for GATE Registration 2027.

A big update has come out for lakhs of candidates waiting for the ‘Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering’ i.e. GATE 2027 to be conducted for admission to Master’s degree (M.Tech/Ph.D.) in the prestigious engineering and higher educational institutions of the country and for recruitment in major public undertakings (PSUs). Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), which is conducting the examination this year, has once again extended the online registration process starting from August 27 as per the predetermined schedule.

On the official portal (gate2027.iitm.ac.in) run by IIT Madras, the date of August 27 has been removed and in its place a new prompt “GATE Online Application Registration Will Start Soon” has been issued. This is the second time that a change has been seen in the registration date of GATE 2027. Earlier the application window was scheduled to open on August 14, which was rescheduled to August 27 and now it has been postponed for some time without any fixed date. However, the last date for regular application without late fee is fixed as 27 September 2026.

No clear reason for the delay in application has been officially made public by IIT Madras, but sources and technical analysts believe that this time the decision has been taken due to load-testing and server integration of new modern technical features added to the portal.

This time two major technical security standards have been made mandatory for GATE 2027:

  • DigiLocker Integration: Auto-verification of identity and educational documents through DigiLocker linked to their Aadhaar has been made mandatory for all Indian citizens.

  • Live Facial Recognition (Live Photo Verification): Instead of just uploading the old passport size photograph while filling the form, live face capture technology from the candidate’s laptop webcam or mobile phone camera (minimum 5 megapixel) has been added.

The final round of technical testing is being conducted on the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) to avoid problems like server crashes and data mismatches when lakhs of students are visiting the portal simultaneously.

As per the updated information brochure released by IIT Madras, the calendar of key activities of GATE 2027 is scheduled as follows:

  • Starting Date of Online Registration (GOAPS Portal): To be announced soon (TBA)

  • Last date of application without late fee (Regular Fee): 27 September 2026

  • Last date for form filling with late fee (Extended Window): 05 October 2026

  • Application Form Correction Window (Correction Time): 14 October to 21 October 2026

  • Exam City Allotment Information: 04 January 2027

  • Expected date of release of admit card: In the last week of January 2027

  • GATE 2027 exam dates: 06, 07, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027 (total 6 days in two shifts)

  • Declaration of Result: 19 March 2027

Candidates appearing in GATE 2027 have been instructed to keep their digital profiles ready before the opening of the application window.

Important technical instructions for the candidates:

  • Folder creation on DigiLocker: All candidates have to create their account on the government DigiLocker portal (digilocker.gov.in). It is mandatory to go to DigiLocker drive and create a new folder named “GATE2027” without any space, where 10th, 12th, graduation mark sheets and category certificates will be saved.

  • Live Face Capture: While filling the form the system will click the live photo of the candidate. For this, sit in a well-lit room, the background should be white or light and there should be no glasses, cap or mask on the face.

  • Renewal of Documents: SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS and PWD category certificates should be in the prescribed format of Government of India and of prescribed validity date.

GATE 2027 exam will now be conducted for a total of 30 subjects (Test Papers). This year, in view of the increasing demand for automation and smart manufacturing, IIT Madras has included a brand new paper named ‘Robotics and Automation – RA’.

Robotics and Automation (RA) paper is divided into two parts:

  • Part A: Common Section (Compulsory for all)

  • Part B: It will have two sub-sections—Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Candidates will be able to choose the subject according to their ability.

Apart from this, changes have been made in the syllabus and marks division of Biotechnology (BT). The paper codes and structure of Engineering Sciences (XE), Humanities and Social Sciences (XH), Life Sciences (XL) and Textile Engineering and Fiber Science (TF) have also been revised.

There is no maximum age limit for appearing in GATE exam and there is no restriction on the number of attempts.

  • Educational qualification: Candidates who are currently studying in the third or higher year of any government recognized undergraduate degree (Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts, or Humanities), or have completed their degree, are eligible to apply.

  • Two-Paper Combination: Candidates can apply for a maximum of two test papers, provided they are among the approved two-paper combinations approved by IIT Madras. For example, Computer Science (CS) students can choose Data Science & AI (DA), Electronics (EC), Mathematics (MA), Mechanical (ME), Robotics (RA) or Statistics (ST) as the second paper. Keep in mind that if you choose another paper, the application fee will also be double.

IIT Madras has determined the category-wise application fee for GATE 2027 as follows:

  • Female/SC/ST/PwD Candidates: ₹1,000 per test paper (in regular time) and ₹1,500 (with late fee).

  • General, OBC, EWS and all other category candidates (including foreign nationals): ₹2,000 per test paper (in regular time) and ₹2,500 (with late fee).

Easy Steps to Apply:

  1. Visit the official website gate2027.iitm.ac.in.

  2. Click on “GOAPS 2027 Registration” link available on the homepage.

  3. Register by entering your name, mobile number, email ID and password.

  4. Login with the generated enrollment ID and password.

  5. Sync profile with DigiLocker and fill personal, educational and address related details.

  6. Select the exam city option and test paper.

  7. Upload signature in prescribed format and complete live photo capture.

  8. Submit the form by paying the application fee through Net Banking, UPI or Credit/Debit Card and save the print out.

IIT Madras will release the official notification of revised registration date very soon. Students are advised to stay away from misleading news on social media and keep an eye on the official website only.
