IIT Kanpur will solve the challenges of the steel sector in the country

Kanpur, July 26 (HS). Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on Friday to enhance cooperation in research, development and consultancy studies. The aim is to advance their joint efforts in solving major technological challenges within the steel industry. In this way, Kanpur IIT will solve the challenges of the steel sector in the country through innovation.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean, Research & Development, IIT Kanpur and Sandeep Kumar, Executive Director, Iron & Steel Research & Development Centre, SAIL. Secretary, Union Ministry of Steel Nagendra Nath Sinha, Director, IIT Kanpur Prof. Manindra Agarwal, Chairman, SAIL Amarendu Prakash, Deputy Director, IIT Kanpur Prof. Brajbhushan, Dean, Academic Affairs, IIT Kanpur Prof. Shalabh, Head, Material Science & Engineering, IIT Kanpur and Prof. Jayant K. Singh, Head, Chemical Engineering, IIT Kanpur were also present on the occasion.

IIT Director Prof. Manindra Aggarwal said that we also propose to strengthen our commitment to R&D for technological innovation in the steel industry through the formation of a Section VIII company in collaboration with the Ministry of Steel. This will leverage our inherent strengths in digital technologies, including modelling and simulation, to provide solutions to critical challenges facing the country in the steel sector.

Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Nagendra Nath Sinha said that IIT Kanpur and SAIL have made a collaborative effort to address the technological challenges related to steel decarbonisation, use of hydrogen in DRI production, waste utilisation, mineral beneficiation of lean ore and movement of bulk material etc.

SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash said SAIL will be the first customer for products developed by start-ups incubated at IIT Kanpur. Professor Tarun Gupta, Dean, Research & Development, IIT Kanpur said IIT Kanpur is equipped with state-of-the-art research facilities and a diverse team of experts to effectively address these technological challenges. This partnership will set the stage for significant advancements in steel industry technologies through collaborative research and innovation.
