IIT Bombay Fines Students: A case of insulting Lord Rama and Goddess Sita during a play in the open air theater of IIT Bombay has come to light. Taking strict action in this case, the institute has imposed a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh on the students. The amount of fine is equal to the fees of one semester. In March, the student participated in a play called 'Rahovan' based on Ramayana. This play is an insult to Hinduism as well as Ram and Sita. IIT has also punished seven other students.
Violation of the penalty will result in further ban
When the complaint of the students reached the management in this matter, a meeting of the disciplinary committee was called on May 8 to resolve the complaint of the drama. IIT Bombay issued a penalty notice to the student on June 4. The notice states that a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh must be deposited in the Dean's office on July 20, 2024. It is also said that further sanctions will be imposed for violating this penalty.
How much is the fine?
In the complaint regarding this play, it has been said that it has hurt our cultural and religious sentiments. After much deliberation, the committee decided to take strict action. A fine of Rs 1.2 lakh each was imposed on the senior students and Rs 40,000 on the junior students. Not only this, the accused students have also been expelled from the hostel.
Who protested?
The notice sent to the students was shared on the social media platform X by IIT B For India, a group on the IIT Bombay campus that claims to uphold the values of Indian culture. The same group had protested against the play. The latter welcomed the institute's action.
