Five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek leads Poland to the United Cup final by defeating Kazakhstan Swiatek played a key role in helping Poland reach the final by defeating Elena Rybakina in straight sets.
The tournament final will be played in Sydney on Sunday where Poland will face Coco Goff-led USA or Czech Republic. After winning the match, Swiatek said that this victory makes me proud. Swiatek’s win gave Poland a 2–0 lead and sent them into the final. Swiatek’s stellar performance has also raised alarm bells for her rivals at the Australian Open Grand Slam, starting on January 12. Iga defeated Rybakina in straight sets to advance. The first set was very tight and Swiatek defeated his opponent 7-6 (7-5). Iga won the second set 6-4. The first set went to a tiebreaker and Rybakina saved two set points.
Earlier, in the men’s singles match, Hubert Hurkacz defeated Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to give Poland a 2-0 lead. World number 16 Hurkacz lost both his matches in the group stage but regained his form by defeating Britain’s Billy Harris in the quarter-finals.
