Healthy Diet: So there is no magic potion or tonic to increase life, but you can have a long and healthy life by adopting a vegetarian diet. According to a new study, a vegetarian diet can slow down the process of biological aging. Changes in DNA can be reduced by vegetarian food. A study on 21 young adults has been published in the Biomedical Central Medicine Journal.

How was the study done?

An American research team studied the effects of a short-term vegetarian diet. For this, they gave one of the Jews in each pair a non-vegetarian diet for eight weeks, while the other was given a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarians can live longer and healthier lives

A study of the effects of diet on DNA in vegetarians found that non-vegetarians had higher DNA methylation. In this process, gene expression deteriorates over time. This is called epigenetic aging. This process was seen to be reduced in organs such as the heart, liver, as well as the metabolic and inflammatory systems in vegetarian diets.

Keeps heart and liver healthy

After eight weeks, the researchers found that the vegetarians had healthier hearts, livers, inflammation and metabolic systems. These changes were not seen in those who ate meat. The authors cautioned that it's unclear how much of these changes may be linked to their diets.

Data from the Twins Nutrition Study, based on the Study of Aging, was published in the journal Biomedical Central Medicine. The authors say that the results of this study can be best defined only after follow-up studies in a larger population.

Weight also reduces

Another concern for the study was that vegetarians lost an average of two kilograms more weight, while vegans gained weight. Being underweight also reduces epigenetic aging. In addition, the authors also concluded that vegetarian diets reduce calorie intake.
