It often happens with crores of passengers traveling by Indian Railways that the confirmed train ticket booked months ago turns out to be useless at the last moment due to some emergency. In such a situation, most of the passengers cancel the tickets to avoid losses, due to which the huge cancellation charge is deducted as per the railway rules and the refund amount is reduced to half. But very few people are aware that Indian Railways provides a special legal facility to the passengers to transfer their confirmed ticket in the name of another person. If you are not in a position to travel yourself, then instead of canceling the ticket, you can keep the journey safe by changing the name of the passenger.
According to railway rules, if a passenger has a confirmed ticket and is unable to travel due to any reason, he can get his ticket transferred to the name of his direct family members. This includes mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband or wife. This facility is valid only for those family members who have direct blood relation or marital relation with you. This general family category does not apply to the name of a distant relative or friend.
If you are an employee of any Central Government, State Government or Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) and you have booked a ticket for your journey, but suddenly due to administrative work or government duty you have to cancel the tour, then your ticket can be transferred to the name of another colleague in the same department in your place. For this, a formal letter issued by the authorized officer is necessary.
If tickets have been booked as a group (party ticket) to attend a wedding, marriage procession or a large family function and at the last moment any member is unable to attend, then the name of another person can be added or changed in the ticket on the written application of the group leader or party head. Due to this, the reservation of the entire group is not affected and the journey remains smooth.
This rule proves to be extremely helpful during group educational tours of National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets or students of any recognized school, college or university. If any student or cadet becomes ill or is unable to go, the name of another student can be entered on that ticket with the approval of the Principal of the institution, Headmaster or an authorized officer of NCC.
If athletes or sports team members of any national or state level recognized sports federation are traveling and any player of the team gets injured or absent, then the reservation of that player is transferred in the name of a reserve player on the basis of a letter from the team manager or authorized sports body.
To transfer a train ticket, there are some mandatory rules and deadlines to be followed:
-
Time Limit: For family members, government employees and sports teams, it is necessary to apply at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. Whereas, in case of marriage ceremony or group tickets of students, the application has to be submitted 48 hours before the departure of the train.
-
Process: The ticket holder has to go to the Chief Reservation Supervisor (CRS) or Reservation Counter of the nearest railway station with the printout of his original confirmed ticket (counter or e-ticket), his identity card and the original identity card (like Aadhar Card, Voter ID) and proof of family relationship (Ration Card, Family Register, etc.) of the person in whose name the ticket is to be transferred.
-
Condition: Railways provides this facility only once in the entire ticket lifetime. Once the name is changed, it cannot be transferred to any other person.
