Once again the round of statements has intensified in the politics of Pakistan and this time the country’s former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed a very surprising wish. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief and elder brother of current Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif, has expressed his desire to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir i.e. PoK. Addressing an election rally in Muzaffarabad, he claimed that PoK is as important to him as his own province Punjab and his ancestors also belonged to Kashmir, hence he considers the region as his ‘second home’.
Will appeal to Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz wants to take care of development himself
While delivering a speech from the election platform, Nawaz Sharif said that if his party wins the upcoming elections, he will request his brother and the country’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to appoint him as the Prime Minister of PoK. He argued that there is no political ambition behind his demand, but his intention is to take care of the development of this area himself. However, political analysts believe that amidst the political turmoil and economic crisis within Pakistan, this statement of Nawaz Sharif is just an attempt to find political ground.
PoK is going through a period of unrest and challenges of upcoming elections.
Elections are going to be held in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) between July 27 and August 10, but the current situation remains very turbulent. Interestingly, in these elections, Nawaz Sharif’s party PML-N is contesting from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which is also its ally in the central government. On the other hand, this entire area is in the grip of huge protests and mass movements these days. Under the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), there are continuous protests against inflation, skyrocketing electricity rates and privileges of the rulers, in which more than 30 people have lost their lives so far. Despite this, the ‘long march’ of anti-government protesters and the warning that the protests will continue have increased the problems of the administration.
India’s stand is completely clear: PoK is our integral part
On one hand, while the leaders of Pakistan are holding election rallies in PoK and making strange demands, on the other hand, the stand of the Indian government has been very clear and strict in this matter. New Delhi has always taken the stand that the entire Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are an integral and inseparable part of India and Pakistan has illegally and forcibly occupied a large part of it. India has always lodged a strong protest over the so-called elections and administrative meetings being held in PoK and Gilgit-Baltistan and has clarified that India does not give any recognition to any political activity or so-called assembly in these illegally occupied areas.
