“I will die in 2026, my age is ending, give me bail” – Manik Bhattacharya cried bitterly in the court

Kolkata, July 04 (HS). Trinamool Congress MLA and former Primary Education Board Chairman Manik Bhattacharya, arrested in the appointment corruption case, on Thursday pleaded for bail in the Calcutta High Court. He said that his age is ending and he will die in 2026. Manik himself pleaded for his bail in the court and emotionally said that he has a doctor's report which confirms this.

On Thursday, Manik's case was heard before Justice Shubhra Ghosh. Manik did not take the help of any lawyer and represented himself. Manik said that I had a surgery in 2016. At that time the doctors said that I can live for another 10 years. This means I will die in 2026. I have spent almost two years in jail. Please grant me bail.

Justice Ghosh asked the ED why Manik is not being granted bail and what are the reasons for keeping him in jail? ED lawyer Firoz Edulji said that Manik has been accused of serious financial irregularities and illegal transactions in the appointment corruption case and he has been arrested under the PMLA law. The ED said that they need two days to present the case in detail.

The next hearing of the case will be on Friday. Earlier, Manik had also filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court, which was rejected. The Supreme Court had directed him to re-file his petition in the High Court.

Along with Manik, his wife and son were also taken into custody in the appointment case. His wife Shatarupa Bhattacharya was granted bail by the High Court, while his son Shouvik got bail from the Supreme Court.
