These days the demand for rough and tough and off-road vehicles is skyrocketing in the Indian automobile market. In this series, South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai, playing a big masterstroke, has filed the design patent of its new off-road SUV ‘Boulder’ (Hyundai Boulder Concept) in India. As soon as the patent images of this production-spec SUV were leaked, the entire automobile sector was in shock. This is the first time in Hyundai’s history that the company is preparing to introduce a rugged SUV based on body-on-frame (ladder-frame) architecture, moving away from its traditional monocoque platform.
Thar and Scorpio-N will face competition, the car will be seen in muscular and boxy look.
The patent photos clearly show that the overall look of Hyundai Boulder is quite boxy, muscular and rugged. The front fascia of the vehicle has square headlamps with vertical LED strips, closed-off grille and an off-road bumper with a strong skid plate. The side profile, wide flared wheel arches, chunky off-road tyres, high ground clearance and a strong roof mounted utility rack give it the look of a proper adventure SUV. It has a tailgate-mounted spare wheel and split LED taillamps at the rear, making it a strong contender against the Mahindra Thar, Scorpio-N and Maruti Jimny.
Option of both electric and ICE powertrain, will be equipped with 4×4 all-wheel drive
According to reports and patent details, this new ladder-frame platform of Hyundai is quite flexible and modular. It is designed to support conventional petrol/diesel (ICE) engines as well as pure electric (EV) battery systems. To make off-roading easier, it is expected to get a dual-motor or heavy-duty 4×4 all-wheel drive (AWD) system, independent suspension geometry and multi-terrain drive modes. The closed grill design clearly indicates that its all-electric version can also be launched in the market.
Aircraft like physical buttons will be available in the cabin, know when will it be launched?
Although the interior is not shown in the patent, but based on the global concept model, its cabin is going to be rough-and-tough. The cabin can be found with aircraft cockpit styled robust physical knobs, off-road modes controller, HUD (Heads-up Display) and fold-out tray tables useful for camping. The company aims to introduce 26 new models in India by FY2030, including a flagship off-roader. It is believed that Hyundai Boulder can be seen running on Indian roads by 2027 or 2028.
