Rain has started in parts of Toronto in Canada and up to 60 mm of rain is expected in Toronto and surrounding areas throughout the day, although some areas may receive more than that.
Possibility of flooding
“If you're outside, especially traveling in the morning, it can be very dangerous,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Daniel Liotta. Rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm are expected at times. “Heavy rainfall may cause flash flooding and potholes on roads. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas,” Environment Canada said in its warning. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has also issued a similar flood warning.
Request to stay away from coastal areas
“People are urged to stay away from rivers, streams and coastal areas. Avoid all recreational activities in or near water, including fishing, canoeing, hiking, etc., at this time as conditions may change,” the TRCA said.
Impact of Hurricane Beryl
According to Canadian forecasters, the heavy rain is expected to turn into sporadic showers Wednesday night and Thursday. Hurricane Beryl first made landfall in Grenada, then moved deep into the Caribbean Sea, where it affected Jamaica and eventually Mexico. It then weakened to a tropical storm as it headed toward Texas, where it produced tornadoes and flooding. What's special about this type of event is that it brings really tropical, moisture-laden air and that's what gives us the potential for really heavy rain.
