New Delhi: There has been an uproar over the death of 14 people including eight women in the Delhi government's shelter home 'Asha Kiran' located in Rohini, the national capital. Delhi's Revenue Minister Atishi has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and has sought a report within 48 hours. The cause of death of 14 people in the shelter home is believed to be malnutrition, contaminated food-water and stale food.

Delhi government minister Atishi said that it is shocking to hear such bad news in Delhi. If there is truth in this news then we will not accept such a mistake. This is a serious matter and it will be investigated seriously.

Asha Kiran, run by the Delhi government, is run for mentally ill people and works under the Social Welfare Department. After the resignation of Rajkumar Anand, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has not yet appointed anyone as a minister in this department. This incident has also raised questions on the functioning of the Delhi government regarding shelter homes.

Delhi Minister Atishi said that there are 980 people and 450 caretakers in Asha Kiran. This shelter home is a shelter for mentally challenged people. Here mentally deranged people are also suffering from other diseases. The official said that out of the 14 dead, one was a teenager, whose age was between 14 to 15 years, while the rest 13 were adults, whose age was more than 20 years.

National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma visited Asha Kiran Shelter Home to investigate the incident. The Commission said that more people were kept in this shelter home than its capacity. Its capacity is 255 people while 493 women were kept in it. Due to over capacity, they faced problems like stale food, contaminated food and water and malnutrition. The 14 people who died were also suffering from diseases like fever and diarrhea. Apart from this, there was also a serious problem of quality care in the shelter homes. The NCW has sought a report from the state government regarding the incident. According to a media report, a government official said that three people died in January, two in February, one in March and three in April at the government shelter Asha Kiran. Also, there was an alarming increase in the number of deaths in June and July. 27 people died here in the last seven months. 13 people died in July itself.
