News India Live, Digital Desk: Tremendous tension arose during a procession being taken out to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Belagavi district of Karnataka. A sudden stone pelting on a procession passing in front of a mosque turned the situation violent. Within no time the crowd went out of control and the miscreants set fire to the vehicles and carts parked on the roadside. Amidst heavy tension, the entire area has been converted into a cantonment.
What is the whole matter?
According to the information received, the incident took place in a sensitive area of Belagavi. A grand procession was being taken out on the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti. As the procession reached near a local mosque, some anti-social elements present there started sloganeering, which soon turned into stone pelting. Eyewitnesses say that stones were thrown from the rooftops, due to which many people participating in the procession were injured.
Panic due to arson and vandalism
After the stone pelting incident, angry people retaliated, which worsened the atmosphere. The miscreants targeted public property and set fire to the carts and two-wheelers of many fruit vendors. The plume of smoke rising into the sky spread panic in the area and people started running here and there to save their lives.
Heavy police force deployed, section 144 applied
Considering the seriousness of the situation, the district administration has immediately deployed additional police force (KSRP). Senior police officers reached the spot and dispersed the crowd. As a precautionary measure, Section 144 has been imposed in the affected areas and internet services are also being monitored. Police have so far detained dozens of suspects and CCTV footage is being scrutinized.

The Karnataka government and local administration have appealed to the people to maintain peace and not pay heed to any kind of rumour. Police say that no culprit who incites violence will be spared. At present the police is conducting flag march in the entire Belagavi.
