Taking a very revolutionary and big step in the field of higher education and research, Delhi University has opened the doors of PhD for those students who have not done Master’s degree i.e. MA or post graduation. Under the National Education Policy (NEP 2020), meritorious students who have completed the four-year undergraduate course (FYUP) can now directly get admission into the doctoral program i.e. PhD. The DU administration has also released the official entrance exam pattern and detailed syllabus of research methodology for this special process. Under this new system, students will not need to go through the lengthy process of the traditional two-year master’s program. Let us know what is the entire process of getting admission in PhD without MA and what is the qualification fixed for it.
Under this special provision of Delhi University, only those students can directly apply for PhD who have successfully completed a four-year undergraduate program (with research or entrepreneurship) from DU or recognized institutions. It is mandatory for students belonging to General, OBC and EWS categories to have a minimum 7.5 CGPA in their four-year graduation course, while for SC and ST category candidates, the criteria has been set to be a minimum of 7 CGPA. Additionally, it is also mandatory for the student to have a report of any dissertation, academic project or entrepreneurship work completed during his/her fourth year. This facility is proving to be a boon especially for those youth who want to start their research career in a short time.
In this admission process of DU, a huge relief has been given to those students who have already passed the national level prestigious examinations. Candidates who have passed examinations like UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE or CEED are exempted from the common entrance examination conducted by the university. Such eligible candidates can directly apply for the interview process through the admission portal of the university on the basis of their score card. However, students who do not have these national scores will have to appear for the entrance examination conducted by DU.
For the students who are progressing through the entrance examination, DU has released the new exam structure. The exam will be of total 100 marks and its duration has been fixed at 2 hours. This paper is divided into two main parts:
-
First Part (Research Methodology): This section will be of 50 marks in which multiple choice questions (MCQs) will be asked. There is a provision for negative marking in this section, under which 25% marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.
-
Second Part (Subject-Specific): This will also be of 50 marks in which descriptive questions related to the subject and based on the fourth year research project will be asked.
Only students who score at least 50% marks in the examination (45% for reserved categories) will be considered eligible for the next stage i.e. interview. While preparing the final merit list, 70% weightage will be given to the entrance test and 30% weightage will be given to the interview performance.
Delhi University has released the Common Syllabus of Research Methodology for various subjects including Commerce, Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical and Natural Sciences on the official website admission.uod.ac.in. The syllabus covers the basics of research, literature review, data collection methods, sampling techniques, qualitative and statistical data analysis as well as important topics related to academic ethics and plagiarism. Students can visit the university portal and download the detailed syllabus as per their subject and strengthen their preparation.
