Breastfeeding and the baby's immune system: According to experts, mother's first milk is like the first vaccination for the baby. This increases the child's immunity. The child remains healthy. Mother's milk protects the child from many diseases. Mother's milk is like nectar for a newborn baby.

The health and physical development of a newborn baby depends on the diet you give him. Pediatricians always recommend that a baby should be breastfed right from birth as it is the best diet for him, and it is also essential for boosting his immunity. Dr Trupti Raheja, Principal Consultant (Obstetrics & Gynecology), CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, explains how breastfeeding boosts the baby's immunity, which can protect him from many diseases.

Presence of antibodies –
Breast milk contains high levels of antibodies, especially IgA, which attack the mucous membranes in the baby's throat, lungs, and intestines.

Presence of WBCs
Breast milk contains live white blood cells that provide extra support to the immune system. This means that your babies will be less likely to get diseases if you breastfeed.

Protein and enzyme content –
Breast milk contains a variety of proteins and enzymes such as lactoferrin, lysozyme and oligosaccharides that inhibit bacterial growth.

Probiotic properties-
Breast milk has probiotic properties. Hence, they promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, which helps in improving overall immunity.

Prevent inflammation –
Breast milk contains anti-inflammatory factors such as cytokines that reduce inflammation and allergic reactions.
