How did Raj Kapoor reject Awara Hoon and add the song?

The history of the song Awara Hoon…Ya Gardish Mein Hoon Aasmaan Ka Tara Hoon… from Raj Kapoor’s film is similar. The song which gave Raj Kapoor global recognition and made him famous all over the world, was initially rejected by him. He refused to join the film Awara. The film Awara was completed in 1951 but the song Awara Hoon… written by Shailendra was not a part of the film until its release. How did this song get included in the film later? Why did Raj Kapoor reject it in the first place? And what was the role of writer Khwaja Ahmed Abbas in this? Take a look at this exciting story..

After ‘fire’ ‘rain’ brought spring to life.

In 1948, Raj Kapoor lost everything by making the film Aag. The film flopped but his intention remained intact. After the success of Barsaat released in 1949, producer-director-actor Raj Kapoor, lyricist-Shailendra, music composer-Shankar-Jaikishan, singer-Mukesh formed a team and later became a famous Urdu writer. Screenwriter – Khawaja joined this group. Ahmed Abbas, who had earlier written films like ‘Dharti Ke Lal’. This group came together in Raj Kapoor’s next film Awara and this film created a stir not only in India but in many countries of the world from Russia to China. Especially the song Awara Hoon… became quite popular. It remains an iconic song even today. But Raj Kapoor did not like this song and the film was made without it.

Raj Kapoor did not want to take risks.

It was only three years after the country’s independence that the failure of the film Aag did not bother him. Now he needed many superhit films. At that time Raj Kapoor was confused about including this song in his film, in fact he did not want to take any risk. After the film Barsaat, Raj Kapoor became a big celebrity and Shailendra’s status was smaller than him. Therefore, when Raj Kapoor refused, Shailendra also thought it better to remain silent. However, the two shared a close friendship and there is no doubt that Raj Kapoor was a fan of Shailendra’s poems and songs from the beginning. Raj Kapoor respected poet Shailendra a lot and Shailendra also respected his friend Raj Kapoor a lot.

The song was added on the suggestion of writer KA Abbas.

Before the release of Awara, Raj Kapoor listened to the song again, but he was skeptical. Coincidentally an idea came to his mind and he decided to meet one of his favorite writers, Khawaja Ahmed Abbas, for the song Awara Hoon…. Raj Kapoor and Shailendra both K.A. Went to Abbas and discussed the song. After listening to the song, Khawaja Ahmed Abbas said – It is amazing and if it is included then it can be the theme song of Awara. Later, on the suggestion of Abbas Sahab, Raj Kapoor shot this song separately to include it in his upcoming film Awara Hoon. ..and then later the film was sent for release.
