News India Live, Digital Desk: The line between religion and politics seems to be blurring once again. Recently, Swami Avimukteshwaranand has expressed strong objection to a comment made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding Shankaracharyas. He not only termed the CM’s statement as against the scriptures, but also raised questions on his being a ‘Yogi’ as well as holding the post of ‘Chief Minister’.
Root of controversy: What is the whole matter?
Actually, this controversy started when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said some things during a program regarding the role of Shankaracharyas and their statements.
Shankaracharya’s argument: Avimukteshwarananda said how can a person who claims to be a ‘Yogi’ sit on the throne of power?
Dignity of office: He argued that according to the scriptures, renunciation and power (scepter) are different paths. If someone is a Sanyasi, he should stay away from politics, and if he is in politics, he has no right to be called ‘Yogi’.
Sharp questions of Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand
Swami Avimukteshwarananda raised many serious questions while talking to the media:
Hurt on tradition: He alleged that the government and politicians were trying to interfere in religious positions and traditions.
Explanation of Shankaracharya post: He clarified that the post of Shankaracharya is not decided by the likes and dislikes of any person, but by the scriptures and the traditions established by Adi Shankaracharya.
Opposition Role: Shankaracharya said that if we speak the truth to protect religion, then it should not be linked with politics.
stir in political circles
This is not the first time that Avimukteshwarananda has expressed disagreement with the decisions of BJP or Yogi government. Even during the consecration of Ram temple, his statements had made a lot of headlines. Now his attack on the harmony between ‘Yogi and the Chief Minister’ has given a new opportunity to the Samajwadi Party and other opposition parties for discussion.
