WFI Vice President Jai Prakash Chaudhary on Vinesh Phogat: The ad hoc bench of the Sports Arbitration again postponed its decision on the appeal of Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat against her disqualification before the finals at the Paris Olympics till August 16 on Tuesday. The Court of Arbitration was going to give its decision on Tuesday on whether Vinesh will get the silver medal or not, but the decision was postponed for the third time in the last one week. At the same time, regarding the delay in the decision to disqualify wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Vice President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Jai Prakash Chaudhary said that he feels that the decision will be in favor of the athlete.
Jai Prakash Chaudhary said, 'This should not have happened. But, I think Vinesh's team will want something. It seems that some powerful people are involved in this matter and they will get the medal. I would say that this is the fault of their employees. How to reduce weight is their job. But let's see what happens on August 16, big lawyers are present there, PM Modi has also taken cognizance of the matter and I think the decision will come in our favor.'
According to the Indian Olympic Association, arbitrator Dr. Annabelle Bennett, President of the Ad Hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration in the case of Vinesh Phogat v. United World Wrestling and International Olympic Committee, has been granted until 6 pm (9:30 pm IST) on Friday, August 16, 2024, to deliver her award.
At the Paris Olympics, Vinesh reached the final of the women's 50kg freestyle event with a total of three wins, including a victory over Japan's Yui Susaki. But American gold medallist Sarah Hildebrand was knocked out of the competition after she was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit that morning.
Vinesh appealed against this decision in the Court of Arbitration for Sports last Wednesday. And demanded that she be awarded the silver medal jointly with Cuban wrestler Eustralis Guzman Lopez. Lopez lost to Vinesh in the semi-finals but later made it to the finals after Vinesh was disqualified. After this, Vinesh announced her retirement from the sport and said, “I do not have the strength to play further.” However, legendary players from around the world supported Vinesh.
