Hong Kong: Center's decision to conduct spice test of Everest, MDH after controversy

After Singapore, Hong Kong has also banned the sale of some products of Indian spice brands MDH Pvt Ltd and Everest Food Products Pvt Ltd after high levels of pesticide ethylene oxide were found in the spice blends of these companies. After this, the Government of India has decided to test the samples of spices of these two brands. The government has ordered food commissioners to collect samples of the spices from all manufacturing units in the country of both the brands. Samples will be collected from all the production units in three-four days. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said in a statement that a routine monitoring program detected the carcinogenic pesticide ethylene oxide in three MDH spices.

Use despite ban on ethylene oxide

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said that despite a Singapore regulation banning the use of ethylene oxide in the sterilization of spices, widespread levels of it were found in Everest's Matsya Masala, posing a potential health risk to its users. . Limited use of ethylene oxide is permitted to extend the shelf life of spices, but Everest's fish spices were found to contain high levels, which are harmful to public health. People who have used this product and are concerned about their health should consult a doctor immediately.
