Due to increase in HMPV cases, states have also increased vigilance. In Punjab, the elderly and children have been advised to wear masks. Isolation wards are being made in hospitals in Gujarat. In Haryana too, the health department has been ordered to keep an eye on HMPV cases.

Young children are most affected by hMPV, whose symptoms are similar to the common cold and COVID-19. Its biggest impact is seen on small children. Children below 2 years of age are being affected. The Center has advised states to increase surveillance of respiratory diseases like ‘influenza-like illness’ and ‘severe respiratory problems’ and spread awareness about HMPV.

Experts have said that HMPV is not a new virus. It was first identified in 2001. After this it spread all over the world. It spreads through breathing, through the air. It affects people of all age groups. WHO is monitoring the situation and will share the report with us soon.

Symptoms of HMPV include cough, runny nose, sore throat and hoarseness, along with fever for 3 to 5 days. It spreads by shaking hands with an infected person or touching the belongings of the victim. People with weakened immunity are at greater risk of pneumonia and bronchitis. At the same time, there is no vaccine for it yet, it is being treated according to the symptoms of flu.
