The Central Government has taken a huge and historic step towards promoting self-reliance in the national security and defense sector. Huge defense procurement proposals worth about Rs 1.10 lakh crore for the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force have been formally approved in the high-level meeting of the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) held on Monday under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The main objective of this big defense deal is to further strengthen the firepower, tactical efficiency and technical strength of the three armies as per the modern warfare needs so that the security of the country’s borders can be made completely infallible. Keeping in mind the current geopolitical circumstances and security challenges, this decision of the government is being considered as one of the largest and important defense acquisitions in the Indian military history, which will also give an unprecedented boost to the country’s defense manufacturing capabilities.
#Mega defense deal approved in the Defense Acquisition Council meeting
In this important meeting of the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), many far-reaching proposals for the modernization of the three armies of the country were discussed deeply, after which ‘Acceptance of Need’ i.e. AON was granted. According to the official information given by the Defense Ministry, the biggest feature of this entire defense acquisition package of Rs 1.10 lakh crore is that ‘Make in India’ and ‘Self-reliant India’ campaign has been kept paramount in it. About 98 percent of the total defense equipment and military hardware approved will be procured directly from the domestic Indian defense industry. This will not only drastically reduce India’s dependence on foreign defense equipment but will also provide a golden opportunity to strengthen the defense manufacturing hub within the country. This step of the government will encourage private and public industries in the Indian defense sector on a large scale, so that in the future, modern weapons and military equipment can be manufactured indigenously at a faster pace.
#Army will get CBRN Recei vehicles and modern high mobility vehicles
Many state-of-the-art vehicles and equipment have been included in this mega defense deal to multiply the ground and tactical capabilities of the Indian Army. Procurement of Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Receipt vehicles has been specifically approved for the Army which will play an extremely important role in providing accurate detection, immediate identification, continuous surveillance and protection of troops in any potentially chemical, biological or nuclear contaminated area. Apart from this, the way has also been paved for the acquisition of state-of-the-art High Mobility Vehicles to facilitate the movement of troops in difficult mountainous and desert areas which will greatly intensify the logistics support and operational mobility of the Army in challenging geographical conditions. With the addition of these modern vehicles to the fleet, the Army will be fully capable of carrying out its tactical operations more quickly and aggressively against the enemy in any emergency situation.
#Combat capability will be strengthened with mechanical mine layers and bridge system
To gain strategic edge in the blink of an eye on the battlefield, the Defense Acquisition Council has decided to purchase some highly specialized and lethal systems. Under this package, self-propelled mechanical mine layers will be procured which will provide the operational capability to carry out mine-laying tasks very quickly and quickly even in the most inaccessible areas so that the path of advance of enemy tanks and vehicles can be immediately stopped. Along with this, approval has also been given to purchase of trawl tanks and omnibus bridge systems to cross various rivers, ravines or difficult terrains during the war. The main use of these state-of-the-art bridge systems is to provide seamless and composite crossing facility to our fast moving combat troops and tank regiments in the battle areas so that the victory chariot of the Indian Army does not stop due to any natural obstacle and the offensive strategic operations can continue without any interruption.
#Advanced light helicopter will provide unprecedented power to both air and army forces
Another biggest and important highlight of this entire defense deal is the large scale procurement of Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) which is being included for both the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The induction of these indigenous and state-of-the-art helicopters into the fleet will significantly enhance the capability of both the armies to successfully carry out the most complex missions in all types of geographical terrains and adverse operational conditions. These helicopters can be used very effectively for quick movement of troops, supply of logistics in inaccessible areas, immediate evacuation of the injured and providing air tactical support. Defense experts believe that with the addition of these helicopters, India’s strategic strike capability will increase tremendously and our forces will be fully prepared at all times to give a befitting reply to any misadventure on the borders.
#Self-reliant India and domestic defense industry will get historic support
This visionary decision of the Defense Ministry will give a new direction and energy to the defense production ecosystem within the country. When 98 per cent of defense equipment will be manufactured and procured from indigenous Indian defense industries, lakhs of new employment opportunities will be created within the country and there will also be unprecedented progress in the field of Research and Development (R&D). This step of the government is proof that India no longer wants to remain only an arms importer but is establishing its strong identity as a major defense exporter at the global level. The country’s defense exports have witnessed consistent record-breaking growth over the past few years and such large domestic defense contracts will provide an excellent platform for Indian industries to enhance their global competitiveness.
#New milestone of India’s strategic preparedness in the eyes of security experts
The country’s leading defense experts and strategic analysts have termed the government’s defense procurement proposals worth Rs 1.10 lakh crore as a new milestone in India’s changing military policy and modern combat preparedness. Modern warfare is no longer limited to only conventional weapons but modern technology, radar systems, advanced mobility, accurate firepower and rapid communication systems play the biggest role in it. All these new equipment and vehicles approved by DAC will make the Indian Forces completely technologically self-reliant and state-of-the-art to deal with every possible security challenge of the future. This defense deal will prove to be a milestone in establishing better coordination between the three armies of the country and giving them complete strategic advantage over the enemy on any front.
