India-Bangladesh: Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said he raised the minority issue in his meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hussain on Monday. The Egyptian national has visited Bangladesh in his first high-level visit to India since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government in August. Misri’s visit comes at a time when attacks on minorities, including Hindus, have increased in Bangladesh since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, increasing tensions between India and Bangladesh.
Due to this tension, the Foreign Secretary reached Dhaka on Monday morning. He reached Dhaka before 9 am in some Indian Air Force aircraft. He was welcomed by Foreign Ministry Director General Ishrat Jahan at Kurmitola airbase.
During his visit, the Foreign Secretary met Bangladesh Foreign Advisor Mohammad Tauheed Hossain, who raised the issue of minorities.
After meeting Hussein, Foreign Secretary Misri said, ‘We also discussed our concerns regarding recent events and the safety and welfare of minorities… We also expressed our concern over the unfortunate incidents of attacks on cultural and religious properties. ‘
Bangladesh Foreign Secretary’s statement came after Misri’s comment
The statement of Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin has come to light after the Foreign Secretary’s comment regarding attacks on minorities. He has said, ‘India should avoid interfering in the domestic affairs of Bangladesh.’
The Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh said, ‘Whatever one’s faith, everyone in Bangladesh is free to practice their religion and there is no room for misunderstanding and misinformation in this regard. Bangladesh has also invited foreign journalists to see the ground situation. We have also said that this is our domestic matter and it is not appropriate for other countries to comment on our internal matters.
He further said, ‘I also reminded the Indian Foreign Secretary that Bangladesh avoids commenting on the domestic affairs of other countries and other countries should also show such concern for us.’
Bangladesh wants better relations with India
Before Misri’s visit to Bangladesh, Shafikul Alam, press secretary to Bangladesh government’s chief advisor Mohammad Yunus, said, ‘Bangladesh wants good relations with India.’
He said, ‘Actually we want our relations with India to improve. We have been saying earlier also that we have historical and cultural ties. In this regard, we want better relations with India, so that the people of both the countries benefit. We also want our relations with India to be based on equality, justice and dignity.
