Dhaka: Bangladesh minority organisation 'Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad' has demanded an independent and impartial investigation under the supervision of the United Nations into the communal violence in the country.

On Thursday, Nirmal Rozario, the organisation's vice-president, said a total of 2,010 incidents of communal violence took place in 68 of the 76 districts and metropolitan areas across the country between August 4 and 20, resulting in nine deaths. 69 places of worship were attacked and vandalised and looted. They were also set on fire.

He also demanded withdrawal of false cases filed against council general secretary Rana Dasgupta and other leaders, end to the ongoing communal violence and arrest and punishment of the culprits. He said nationwide protests and rallies will be held across the country, including Dhaka, on Saturday to press for the demands.

Encroachment on land of listed families

Giving details of the communal violence during the political turmoil that ousted Sheikh Hasina from the post of Prime Minister, Nirmal said in a press conference that some business establishments belonging to minorities were looted, vandalised and set on fire. Nirmal said these families are now living in very poor conditions. He said the maximum violence took place in Khulna division, where four women were raped. The land of some minority families was occupied.
