Namo Bharat Rapid Rail: Hindalco Industries, a leading producer of copper and aluminium, two key metals that are transforming modern transportation and sustainable energy, achieved a milestone when Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday flagged off India's first NaMo Bharat Rapid Rail in Gujarat.
Built on the Vande Bharat platform and commissioned for inter-city transportation, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail runs on power lines made of copper and most of the copper is manufactured by Hindalco. The company is the country's leading supplier of metals used for the motors and internal wiring of the new-age shiny trains.
Rohit Pathak, CEO, Copper Business, Hindalco, said, “As copper becomes a key component in India's journey towards a developed economy and net zero emissions, we are expanding capacities, creating new capacities and introducing innovative products. Electric vehicles and renewable energy are driving demand in a big way. We are also setting up India's first e-waste recycling plant in Dahej, which will increase India's copper recycling capacity and strengthen Hindalco's leadership in environmentally friendly operations.
The flagship of the Aditya Birla Group is electrifying two-thirds of India's homes. It contributes 95 per cent of the electrification of railways. Its recently developed copper and silver alloys are fuelling new phases of high-speed and urban transport, dedicated freight corridors and fast-growing metro rail networks. The company is also going to develop an alloy of copper and magnesium, which will enhance new generation sustainable electrification.
Hindalco has one of the world's largest single location copper smelters at Bharuchana Dahej in Gujarat and it is also connected to the port. Given the growing global demand for the metal, the company is expanding the copper smelting capacity at this unit and is also considering setting up another plant in the business-friendly state.
It is worth noting that Gujarat is becoming a major hub of copper in the world. Gujarat is not only India's leading hub for copper production, but also ranks second in the world after China. As production is increasing, the country's rapid urbanization, windmills and turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles and batteries, as well as everything related to electrification are bringing new supporting industries to meet the demand.
