Prayagraj, 26 September (HS). Allahabad High Court has raised questions on the use of adjectives like 'Honourable' in addressing administrative officers. The court has asked the state government to inform the court if there is any protocol for addressing officers by adding adjectives like 'Honourable' before their name or designation.

While hearing the petition of Krishna Gopal Rathore of Etawah, Justice JJ Munir has asked the Principal Secretary Revenue to file an affidavit in this regard. During the hearing of the petition, it came to the notice of the court that in an official letter written to the Divisional Commissioner Kanpur Division, Collector Etawah addressed him as Honorable Commissioner.

The court said that this is being done continuously in the address of state officials in government correspondence. While it is not clear whether there is any such protocol or not. The court said that adjectives like 'honorable' are definitely used with ministers and other sovereign executives. But it is not known whether it is appropriate for secretaries serving the government or not. The court has directed the Principal Secretary Revenue to file an affidavit on this by October 1 and provide information.
