According to the information, the beginning of Mayen Festival is believed to be about 100 years old. There is a story of Barappu village behind this, which has been narrated by the elders there. Actually, a hundred years ago a hunter of the Torajan tribe went to the forest to hunt in the village. This hunter named Pong Rumasek saw a dead body inside the forest.

Rumasek saw the burnt corpse and stopped. He put his clothes on the corpse and performed the last rites. After this, many good changes came in Rumasek's life and his misery also ended. Since then, the tradition of decorating their ancestors started in this tribe. It is believed that the spirits give blessings if the corpse is taken care of.

Let us tell you that this festival starts with someone's death. When a family member dies, he is not buried in one day, but celebrations are held for several days. Sometimes it goes on for weeks. Actually, it is believed that this is done to make the deceased happy, to prepare him for the next journey. This journey is called Pua.

It begins with the slaughter of large animals like bulls and buffaloes. The house of the deceased is then decorated with the horns of the dead animals. It is believed that the more horns one has at home, the more respect he will receive in the next journey. It is quite expensive, but people follow it. Every few years, the corpses are exhumed, decorated and dressed again.
