With this, Hemant Soren has staked claim to form the government. He will take oath as CM on July 7. On Wednesday, the leaders of the JMM-led coalition unanimously elected him as the leader of the legislative party. Hemant Soren spent five months in jail

Hemant Soren will become the 13th Chief Minister of Jharkhand after the swearing-in ceremony on July 7. Jharkhand was formed from Bihar on November 15, 2000. Since then, there have been 12 Chief Ministers. The new government in Jharkhand may have 12 ministers, while the current state cabinet had 10 ministers, but after the Lok Sabha elections, the JMM-led coalition in the state reduced its strength to 45 MLAs. JMM has 27 MLAs, Congress has 17 and RJD has one MLA. It is worth noting that Hemant Soren, son of JMM supremo Shibu Soren, was released from jail on June 28 after nearly five months. The High Court granted him bail in the money laundering case related to the alleged land scam. He resigned from the post of Chief Minister shortly before being arrested by the ED on January 31.

The JMM expelled two more MLAs, Chamra Linda from Bishnupur and Lobin Hambrom from Borio. Similarly, the BJP's strength in the Assembly has come down to 24, as two of its MLAs – Dhulu Mahato (Bagmara) and Manish Jaiswal (Hazaribagh) – are now MPs. Mandu MLA Jaiprakash Bhai Patel, who contested the elections after joining the Congress, has been expelled by the BJP.
