Helicopter accident reveals, Indian Army lost country’s first CDS due to human error

Human error behind helicopter crash: The cause of death of the country’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat is being said to be human error. The parliamentary committee formed to investigate his death has said in the report, ‘The reason behind the Mi-17 V5 helicopter crash on December 8, 2021 was human error. General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and other armed forces personnel were killed in a military helicopter crash near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

Report presented in Parliament

In a report tabled in Parliament, the Standing Committee on Defense gave data on the number of accidents involving Indian Air Force aircraft during the 13th Defense Plan period. A total of 34 accidents occurred, including nine Indian Air Force aircraft accidents in 2021-22 and 11 aircraft accidents in 2018-19. The report has a column titled ‘Cause’ in which the cause of the accident is stated as ‘human error’.

The 33rd accident data in the report lists the aircraft as ‘Mi-17’ dated 08/12/2021 and the cause as ‘HE(A)’ or ‘Human Error (Aircrew)’. The Defense Ministry told the committee that 34 accidents have been investigated during this period.

When and how did the incident happen?

8th December 2021 was a very sad day for the Indian Army and the country. On this day, an Indian Air Force Mi-17 V5 helicopter was flying from Sulur Air Force Base in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington. Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 12 other armed forces personnel were on board the plane. Shortly after taking off from the airport, the helicopter crashed into the mountains. General Rawat, his wife and 11 other soldiers died in this tragic incident.
